The Loudness War
The Loudness War is something largely unknown to artists and listeners, but is something very controversial amongst producers and engineers. Basically over the years it was brought to the attention of producers through a study that people found louder music to be more impressive. So in an attempt to sell more records, engineers started to make everything louder.
The process is called "limiting", and even when it is done cleverly, it still introduces noise and unpleasant distortions to the sound. It's hard to explain in words, and so below are some links to articles and examples that help to describe exactly what it does.
We believe that music should be kept at as high of a level of quality as possible. We also believe that the listener is in control of the volume knob, not us. Of course, it still boils down to the specific wants of the artist. It is your music after all. But usually with a few demonstrations, most artists prefer the sound that we shoot for, as opposed to the limited, flattened "top 40s" sound.
